newborns | baby abilene is here! | westville, ok newborn phtographer

Hey guys! I've got a super presh newborn session to share with you today. Meet baby Abilene, daughter of Sheri and Derek; sister of Roman, Evan, and angel Lainee (more about their story here). I've been waiting awhile to share these, so lets get started! Isn't she as cute as a button?

Just perfect.

Love this little headband!!

Sheri actually made her little outfit (like cows, sewing is another thing that both fascinates and scares me). Super cute! And have you ever seen such big beautiful eyes?

Peacock feathers and lime green. Yes please.

Abilene was the first baby to try out this new bucket, I think she did it justice. No photoshop here folks - she really was holding her head up like that! I'll bet she'll be walking by 3 months at this rate...any takers??

Aren't these binky's just the best?

What a sleep fighter she was on this day! But alas, the bucket (and the trusty paci) won (again).

This photo is my favorite photo from her session. I love Lainee's angel wings next to Abilene like this - just perfect.

Daddys girl!

This girl actually has the bladder capacity of a large child. If I'm not mistaken, the picture on the right is about the time Abilene peed all over her mom. It just wouldn't stop! Funniest.Thing. Ever.

Ending on a sweet note, I'll leave you with a little smile. Love it!

Happy Friday!

personal | we've lost another toofie! | westville, ok photographer

Howdy! We have lost another tooth today (tooth #3!!), and I couldn't be more excited! Mercy has been tugging at this tooth for awhile now, and my ears (yes, ears!) are thrilled it's finally come out. She looks so cute with her missing little toofer!!

She actually asked (whaaatt??!) me to take her photo with her tooth - if you know Mercy or I, you know it's a constant battle for to get any photos of her willingly. She actually looks happy in these ones too! Merc was so excited to get in front of my camera she didn't even wipe off the bits of toilet paper still clinging to her lip. Love it:

Our tooth loss journey didn't start out nearly as happy as this one - lets flash back to July 2011 for a sec. Doesn't she look a bit crazy here trying to pull it out? This was tooth #1. I love my daughter, and am super excited to blackmail her with these when she is 16. Score!

She was so mortified it actually came out!! (Yes, I know my mirror is dirty. Shhh - comments not allowed!!)

She did so good this time!

What do you think? Should the tooth fairy bring an extra prize for letting me take a photo of her? Do you think I could cram some new wedges under her pillow?

Til next time,

Mel

maternity | westville, ok maternity photographer | Baby Abilene is almost here!

Hey there! So um yeah...I'm a horrible blogger! I am running behind on everything (facebook updates, inquiries, and blogging), so I'm going to attempt to redeem myself with this awesome maternity session I shot last month. Yes internet, last month. Yowza.

This is the McKenzie family. Aren't they presh?

If you've ever had family portraits done, you know that getting your children relaxed and happy with their faces in the general direction of the camera is RARE. I, in a combined effort with Derek & Sheri, have found a solution for that. All you have to do is tell your kids that you will hold them upside down by their feet later, and boom! Happy children.

Looking at this family, one would never guess that they suffered a tragic loss last year. Lainee Pearl, was born last year at 32 weeks, asleep. Sheri brought along a weighted bear, and an angel wing necklace to represent Abilenes sister. This photo is by far my favorite image of our session, and I am so glad that Sheri thought to include Lainee in them. Rest in peace, little one.

I <3 these portraits of Derek & Sheri. So in love!

Evan

Roman

Awesome old barn! And an awesome wasp's nest! These boys be fearless.

Love the boys feet next to Abilenes dainty shoes!

Even though we got great portraits that day, had a lot of fun, and got stared at by a property owner until we left because there was a bull in her field (eeek!), we actually decided to shoot again on another day because we missed the sunset. I blame this on Derek for driving us all the way to Egypt (Egypt = anything that is 30 minutes from pavement). Man oh man, was that AC nice after being in that hot weather! Derek's secret motive for taking the long way around maybe? I'm just kiddin' ya, Derek :).

Both Sheri & I really wanted some images with the sun in them (sunflare...haaaay!!), so we decided to shoot again a week later. This time we were a bit closer to home, at the abandoned factory in Westville. I guess everyone decided to hay their fields at the same time, because this was the only one in town that still had part of the fields uncut. I'm glad, because this location turned out to be awesome! Simply stunning light.

37 weeks! Props to this momma, it was 100 degrees out and she handled it like a champ. Love this moment!

I. Love. Sunflare.

Sans kiddos, we were able to trample through the long grass to grab some intimate maternity portraits. This one is definitely my favorite from day # 2.

I'll end this post with one last gorgeous portrait of Sheri in that nummy light. For inquiring minds, the McKenzie family welcomed baby Abilene to the world two weeks later, in perfect health. Watch for her newborn session, coming soon!

Til next time,

Mel

personal | the blogging adventure begins...

Not sure what to say here...

This is my nephew, lil bubba. Expect to see him a lot.

Greetings and salutations!! No...no, that's not right either. Right, let's try this again.

Hello friends! I'm Melissa. You can call me Mel, or photo-taking wizard. Either is fine with me! Internet, I have decided to start blogging. Scary and daunting prospect, believe me - I know. This will be my 98564133121th attempt to write a blog post (I exaggerate, it's really like my 98564133120th time). I intend to publish it this time, mess or not!

This is my daughter, lil monkey/Mercedes. You can expect to see her a lot too.

Why a blog? Well, not only is it a great tool for photographers...I was also dared. For anyone that knows me, refusing a dare is not acceptable. "I dare you, Melissa," said the evil photographer who knows I have a severe phobia of blogging and shall remain nameless (unless he chooses to reveal himself). "I dare you to get outside of your comfort zone and start blogging." Eeek!

This is Chi chi. She is my kennel reject pekingese. My third child. Mercedes dad is my second child.

With that being said, I hereby decree that I will write and maintain a blog; I will use my blog as an avenue to share recent sessions, favorite photos, personal tidbits to give my present and future clients insight about who I am, and maybe even some wizard photo taking tips here and there for the aspiring photog. I dare YOU to take this journey with me.

Yours,

Mel
